Our Story

Cape Town Roots

We started Ground Leather because we couldn't find leather goods that felt honest. After years of seeing mass-produced bags fall apart and high-street leather that looked like it was made yesterday and would feel old by next week, we knew there had to be another way.

Our workshop sits in the heart of Cape Town's creative quarter. Here, a small team of artisans does what they've been trained to do for years: hand-craft leather goods that improve with age. No shortcuts. No rushing. Just leather, skill, and time.

Why We Do This

Leather isn't just a material to us — it's a conversation between maker and wearer. Full-grain leather tells your story. Every scratch, every crease, every mark becomes part of the bag's character. We wanted to create objects that don't fade into the background of your life. Things you notice. Things you love more over time.

When you buy something handmade, you're not just buying a product. You're buying the hours of work, the trained eye, the small decisions that only come from experience. That matters to us. It should matter to you too.

What "Ground" Means

Ground means grounded. Real. Rooted. It means we're not chasing trends or cutting corners to hit a margin target. It means our leather comes from ethical sources. It means every bag carries the fingerprints of the person who made it. It means we've built this business on a foundation that won't shift when the market demands something cheaper.

Ground also means earth — the hides we use come from animals, and we respect that. We source from suppliers who manage land responsibly. We use what we can, waste as little as possible, and stand behind every single piece we make.

Your Bag Is Waiting

Whether you need a work bag that gets better looking as it ages, or a leather piece that becomes a companion for life, we've made it here in Cape Town. Handcrafted. Honest. Built to last.

What Makes Ground Leather Different

Ground Leather occupies a specific position in the Cape Town leather market: we make full-grain vegetable-tanned leather goods by hand, using only ethically sourced South African hides. We don't outsource, we don't use chrome-tanned leather, and we don't cut corners on materials. Our artisans in Cape Town's creative district have between 20 and 30 years of experience each.

The result is leather goods that function as the opposite of fast fashion — bags, accessories, and homeware designed to be used daily for decades, developing a rich patina that makes each piece uniquely yours over time.

Recognition and Partnerships

Ground Leather ships via JLog (JetLog Pty Ltd), a specialist third-party logistics company based in Cape Town that handles white-glove logistics for fragile and high-value goods.
