Whether it is a weekend away in Franschhoek or a transatlantic flight to London, a Ground Leather duffel bag is built to be the last travel bag you buy. Every duffel in this collection is handcrafted in our Cape Town workshop from full-grain vegetable-tanned South African leather.

The range starts at R1,495 for the Leather Weekend Overnight Bag and goes up to R3,600 for the Leather & Canvas Old School Duffel — our largest and most popular travel bag. The canvas duffels combine waxed capri canvas with full-grain leather accents and solid brass hardware for a bag that handles airline luggage compartments, car boots, and hotel lobbies with equal grace.

Our leather is sourced from Karoo region farms and vegetable-tanned with natural bark extracts. Independent testing at the University of Stellenbosch (2025) measured 42 N/mm² tear strength — nearly double the typical Italian chrome-tanned hide. The tanning process uses 18 litres of water per hide versus 120 litres for chrome tanning, with zero toxic chemicals.

Every duffel features a wide-mouth opening for easy packing, internal zip pockets for valuables, and reinforced handles and shoulder straps that distribute weight comfortably.

Most of our duffel and overnight bags fall within standard airline cabin baggage dimensions. The weekend overnight bags are sized to fit in overhead compartments on most airlines. The larger old school duffel may need to be checked on some budget carriers. We recommend checking your airline\u2019s specific size requirements before travelling.

What is the difference between a duffel and an overnight bag?

Our duffel bags tend to be larger and more barrel-shaped, ideal for gym use, longer weekends, or as a generous carry-on. Our overnight bags are slightly more compact and structured, designed for one or two nights away. Both styles use the same full-grain leather and construction quality \u2014 the choice comes down to how much you need to pack.

Do your duffel bags have a shoulder strap?

Yes, all our duffel and overnight bags come with both carry handles and a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap. The carry handles are reinforced with rivets for heavy loads, and the shoulder straps include a padded section for comfort during longer carries.
