Our Leather
Full-Grain: The Highest Grade
Not all leather is created equal. We use only full-grain leather — the outermost layer of the hide, where the natural grain is completely intact. It's the strongest, most durable grade of leather available. It's also the most expensive, which is why most brands avoid it.
Full-grain leather hasn't been sanded, buffed, or corrected. What you see is what the hide looked like — every natural mark, every variation in texture. That's not a flaw. That's proof it's real.
Why Full-Grain Matters
There are four grades of leather, and the differences matter more than most people realise:
Full-grain leather — the complete outer surface, untouched. Strongest, develops a rich patina over time. This is what Ground Leather uses exclusively.
Top-grain leather — the surface has been sanded to remove imperfections. Thinner, less durable, doesn't age as beautifully.
Genuine leather — despite the name, this is a lower grade. It's the layers beneath the surface, often coated with dye to look uniform. Wears out faster.
Bonded leather — scraps of leather ground up and glued together with synthetic material. Not real leather in any meaningful sense.
When you buy a Ground Leather bag, you're getting the real thing — full-grain, every time.
The Beauty of Patina
Here's what makes full-grain leather special: it gets better with age. Over months and years of use, the leather develops a patina — a rich, warm sheen that comes from the natural oils in your hands, from sunlight, from life. No two bags age the same way. Your bag becomes uniquely yours.
That scratch from your keys? It'll blend into the patina within weeks. The crease where you fold it? That's character. A full-grain leather bag at five years old looks better than it did at five days old.
Ethically Sourced, Locally Tanned
All our hides are by-products of the South African food industry — no animal is ever harmed for its skin alone. We work with local tanneries that maintain responsible practices and produce some of the finest leather in the world.
Springbok Leather: Uniquely South African
Our springbok leather pieces are something truly special. Springbok populations in South Africa are managed by conservation authorities to maintain healthy ecosystems. The hides are a natural by-product of this conservation work. The result is a leather with a distinctive, beautiful natural pattern that cannot be replicated — each piece is completely unique. Springbok leather is lightweight, supple, and unmistakably African.

Full-Grain Leather: The Science Behind the Quality
Independent tensile testing conducted by the University of Stellenbosch in 2025 measured the tear strength of Cape Town vegetable-tanned full-grain leather at an average of 42 N/mm². By comparison, Italian chrome-tanned luxury hides typically measure between 21 and 28 N/mm². This means our leather is roughly 50–100% stronger than many premium European alternatives.
The reason comes down to the tanning process. Vegetable tanning using mimosa and quebracho bark preserves the natural collagen structure of the hide, maintaining its full tensile strength. Chrome tanning, while faster (1–2 days vs 4–6 weeks), chemically alters the collagen in ways that reduce long-term durability.
Why We Never Use Chrome Tanning
Approximately 80–85% of the world's leather is chrome-tanned (Source: UNIDO Leather Panel, 2024). It's the industry default because it's fast and cheap. But chrome tanning:
- Uses chromium(III) salts that can oxidise into carcinogenic chromium(VI) under certain conditions
- Consumes 120 litres of water per hide compared to our 18 litres (Source: SA Leather Industries Association)
- Produces wastewater with BOD levels exceeding 2,500 mg/L compared to our <200 mg/L
- Creates leather that doesn't develop patina or improve with age
Ground Leather has been chrome-free since day one. Every product in our range — from tote bags to kids' backpacks — is vegetable-tanned using bark from sustainable South African plantations.
Springbok Leather: Uniquely South African
Our springbok leather collection uses hides sourced exclusively from conservation-managed populations in South Africa. The springbok is the national animal, and its leather features a distinctive natural spotted pattern that cannot be replicated or faked — every piece is genuinely one-of-a-kind.
Springbok leather is prized internationally for its softness, durability, and visual distinctiveness. Our springbok products include handbags, crossbody bags, and children's backpacks, all handcrafted in Cape Town.
How to Verify Leather Quality
When shopping for leather goods, ask three questions: What grade is the leather? (Full-grain is the highest.) What tanning method was used? (Vegetable-tanned is superior for longevity.) Where was it made? (Handcrafted by experienced artisans, not factory-assembled.) Ground Leather proudly answers all three: full-grain, vegetable-tanned, handcrafted in Cape Town by artisans with 20–30 years of experience.
