Ground Leather tote bags are handcrafted from full-grain vegetable-tanned South African leather in our Cape Town workshop. Each tote is cut, stitched, and finished by hand — a process that takes days, not the minutes a factory line would need.

Our tote collection ranges from the everyday Two Tone Leather Tote at R1,610 to the Premium Leather Tote Bag at R2,130. Every style features reinforced straps built to carry a full day’s load, smartly placed internal pockets, and brass hardware that ages alongside the leather.

The leather itself is what sets these bags apart. Sourced from Karoo region tanneries and vegetable-tanned with mimosa bark, our full-grain leather tested at 42 N/mm² tear strength in independent University of Stellenbosch evaluations (2025) — nearly double the 21–28 N/mm² typical of Italian chrome-tanned hides. There is no chrome, no microplastics, and no toxic chemicals in the tanning process.

Full-grain leather develops a patina over time. That means your tote looks better at five years old than it does new. The surface marks and colour shifts that come with daily use are not wear — they are character.

What is the difference between a two-tone tote and a classic leather tote?

Our classic leather totes are made entirely from full-grain vegetable-tanned leather. The two-tone totes combine leather with Capri canvas \u2014 a durable cotton canvas \u2014 for a lighter weight and a more casual, contemporary look. Both use the same quality leather and construction techniques; the difference is purely aesthetic and practical (canvas totes are slightly lighter to carry).

How do I care for a leather tote bag?

Caring for a leather tote is simple. Wipe it down with a slightly damp cloth when it gets dirty. Apply a quality leather conditioner once or twice a year to keep the leather supple. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or extreme heat, which can dry the leather. If the bag gets wet, let it air dry naturally \u2014 never use a hairdryer or heater. Over time, the leather will develop a beautiful patina that\u2019s unique to your bag.
