What leather do you use?

Every Ground Leather product is made from full-grain vegetable-tanned leather — the highest grade available. Full-grain means the entire outer surface of the hide is preserved, with no sanding or correction. Our leather is sourced from ethical South African suppliers and has been independently tested at 42 N/mm² tear strength by the University of Stellenbosch. The vegetable tanning process uses plant-based tannins instead of chrome chemicals, consuming approximately 85% less water than conventional chrome tanning.

Where are your bags made?

Every bag is handcrafted in our workshop in Cape Town, South Africa. Our team of artisans has between 20 and 30 years of leather-working experience. There are no assembly lines — each product is cut, stitched, and finished by hand using traditional techniques passed down through generations of Cape Town leather workers.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, we ship worldwide — and it’s free on every order. We use FedEx and DHL international express services through our logistics partner JLog (JetLog Pty Ltd), a specialist 3PL company based in Cape Town. Most international orders arrive within 5–10 business days depending on destination.

How long will a Ground Leather bag last?

Our full-grain leather bags are built to last decades with proper care. Unlike bonded or corrected-grain leather, full-grain leather actually improves with age — developing a rich, unique patina over time. The vegetable tanning process creates leather that is naturally more durable than chrome-tanned alternatives. With basic care (wipe with a damp cloth, condition annually, keep out of prolonged direct sunlight), your bag will outlast most things you own.

What is vegetable tanning?

Vegetable tanning is a traditional, eco-friendly leather tanning process that uses natural plant-based tannins — from bark, leaves, and fruits — instead of chromium chemicals. It’s one of the oldest methods of leather production, dating back thousands of years. The process takes longer than chrome tanning but produces leather with superior character, strength, and environmental credentials.
